  About

Benbecula Records began as a CDR based label in the late 90s. Initially concentrating on compilations from local and international artists alike, the “Music Volume” series of vinyl EPs quickly drew respect from independent record shops all over Europe.

The first solo EP from Mikael Romanenko, a Swedish artist based in Scotland, planted the seeds for the framework of style and feel of the label: organic, original, modern and musical. Mikael’s EP was a hit in Germany and was soon followed by the label’s most successful artist to date: Christ.’s “Pylonesque” EP caused such a storm in Japan he was invited to tour there in the summer of 2002, with such dates as headlining the Metamorphose festival at Mt Fuji. Around the same time the “Music” compilations were combined on a single CD compilation and released worldwide giving a second chance to sample the label’s original talent. From that point on, the label concentrated on cultivating home grown talent, culminating in a string of EP releases in 2003 from Greenbank, Frog Pocket and Reverbaphon. 2003 also saw the release of Christ.’s full length album “Metamorphic Reproduction Miracle”, coinciding with a live performance at Barcelona’s Sonar festival, not long after headlining a Benbecula showcase at a sell-out event for Scotland’s Triptych festival.

Meanwhile the label’s popularity grew over the radio waves with turntable attention from mainstream UK radio (BBC) as well as college radio over the world. BBC Radio One’s John Peel was always an admirer and in December 2003, toward the end of a UK tour with Schneider TM, Christ. gave a live session culminating in an almost unheard of request for an encore from the great man!

2004 saw the release of an EP by Operator, a new distribution deal with Shellshock and the 2004 Showcase in Glasgow featuring ex Cocteau Twins member Robin Guthrie as special guest. In Autumn 2004 the release of Reverbaphon’s full length album, "Our Heart Beats with Joy" received substantial press from the likes of The Wire and airplay from BBC Radio 1.

In 2005, Prhizzm from Canada released his acclaimed debut EP "Prhizzm EP", and shortly after the long awaited offering from Christ. "Seeing and Doing EP".  Toward the end of the year we released the first vinyl for some time for the debut release by Birdengine, from Brighton, England, the promo video (produced by Sherbet) for which received fantastic reviews from the film making industry.  Just before Christmas, the label took on the massive undertaking of releasing 12 albums simultaneously in the form of the "Minerals Series" box set.  This "grass roots" release embodied everything the labels stands for - originality, freedom of sound and spirit of independent music making.

Now in 2006, the here and now, check out the news and release schedule for the latest hot offerings!  Benbecula secured a new worldwide distribution deal through Hausmusik so track Benbecula down at a store near you.
