Simon Kealoha has been making music for approximately 10 years,
starting out from a love of hip hop and jazz, which soon got mixed
up with a multitude of other influences such as electro and IDM,
following a move to London around 1998. He moved to Brighton in 2000
and it was there that he met Mark Clifford with whom he released
"Running Taper" on Polyfusia, after helping out on laptop with some
of his Disjecta gigs. After releasing a track on an Audiobulb
compilation as Calika, he released his debut album "Small Talk
Kills Me". A follow up album is due out on Audiobulb in 2007.
Around the time of the Calika album, Simon and Mark were joined by
ex-Bordems drummer Eda and the band CEK was born with Simon on bass.
The band have two or three EPs to release in 2006.
Benbecula Records are proud to release Calika's new album as a
Minerals Series. Benbecula and Audiobulb were sent the same
Calika demo in 2005 and fortunately for Audiobulb, they picked up
Simon's superb music first. We are delighted that Calika's main body of work is in safe and well respected hands.
Reviews
"Simon Kealoha, who is best known as Calika, takes advantage of Benbecula’s accelerated program with The Bright Spot. The songs on The Bright Spot are a combination of old and new material, but Kealoha’s organization and placement of tracks allows the album to play out as a single piece. The album is one of disassociated genres that are arranged in a manner that forces an amicable relationship. Folk, trip hop, cut and paste, ambient, and drone, all make thin weaves throughout the work. Clusters of notes give way to droning tones, hooky basslines slip into atypical noises, and straightforward guitar dives under manipulated beats. This smooth, but irregular, combination sets-up a pattern which is repeated, one way or another, throughout the entire album. With such a pattern set, Kealoha gives himself a lot of room to lay down songs that would not normally work together. He is able to move from accessible to difficult without ever disrupting the flow of the album."
