Christ. is Benbecula’s best selling artist to date with his 2002
debut classic “Pylonesque” and follow up full length album
“Metamorphic Reproduction Miracle” in 2003 causing quite a storm.
That year Christ. toured with Schneider TM culminating in a session
for John Peel broadcast live from Maida Vale in December. 2004 so a
busy touring schedule and work began on some new material. In 2005
he released the “Seeing and Doing EP” and meanwhile got in touch
with some old friends to help out with a limited vinyl promo for the
new album “Blue Shift Emissions”.
The result is “Vernor Vinge”, a track culled from said album along
with an exclusive short and two excellent remixes of exclusive
tracks – dDamage appear courtesy of Planet Mu and Benbecula label
mate Prhizzm steps in to remix “Happyfour Twenty”, a track from the
new album. The result is a four track EP that will hopefully spread
the word about how excellent his second and long awaited album
really is and yet also step forward as another classic Christ.
release in its own right with 3 tracks exclusive to this limited
run.
Reviews
"The title-track alone is worth every penny".
The Milk Factory
"He's certainly been working hard as the two tracks presented here are absolutely lovely and beautifully produced."
Warp
"I always start off Christ reviews with.... 'Christ is some dude who used to be in Boards of Canada but left to do his own thing and he's like the Pete Best of the electronic world'. Well I probably don't but thinking about it I think maybe I should. Because of his previous connections he's always been tarred with the Boards brush...... This new 12" called Vernor Vinge is as good or if not better than anything on the last Boards album. Nice slow paced melodic electronica with simple beats thus relying on the melody to make it stand up. Which is does in spades... Lovely indeed!"
Norman Records
"... The vibe is generally mellow but lovely nonetheless, with the creamiest of chord changes caressing the listener in the melancholy “Vernor Vinge,” the tune's dreamy flow enhanced by the crisp snap of a faded drum pulse. Christ.'s Boards of Canada connection is clearly apparent in the brief “Sunny Cloudy Day” where a woozy synth melody lazily drifts over a sea of dense crackle. The mood naturally shifts in the remixes by Benbecula label-mate Prhizzm and dDamage (Planet Mu). The former's “Happyfour Twenty” steps out in a sunny clockwork strut and interlaces warm chords with the fiery glow of a synth melody while the latter's storming “Ray Breakout” is the most aggressive cut of the four ..."
Textura
"... Crunched hip-hop beats, a
bittersweet analogue synth line, and distressed samples of children
form the perfect soundtrack for a fading photograph. The other three
tracks are exclusive. There’s “One Sunny Cloudy Day,” where simple
synth patterns emerge from a crackling record as it changes speed.
It’s quite short. On the flip is a Prhizzm remix of “Happyfour
Twenty.” Layers of melodic bits occasionally clash over a plodding
beat. Distortion makes parts sound like an old cassette tape. “Ray
Breakout (dDamage Remix)” sounds like an NES game but for its intricacy. A pretty melody makes the song soar ..."
Gridface
"Christ’s output this far has been outstanding and his status as recording artist is beyond being well cemented ... Christ is undoubtedly a very talented electronic musician."
