Influenced by his music lecturer and jazz pianist father, John
Layton developed an early interest in experimental and left-field
music…beginning with the concrete music movement, moving quickly
through the early progressive music scene, towards non-western
musical forms, free jazz, ambient music, and then to the work of
contemporary orchestral and choral composers, particularly Britten,
Ligeti, Part, Messaien.
He started playing bass in his early teens, and also experimented
with the sound-on-sound facility on a faulty old tape recorder,
making many recordings using a miscellany of objects to create
musical and non-musical sounds with. Since the late seventies he has
been in demand as a bass player, exploring many musical genres,
including a 10 year spell with Christopher Wood in the Leeds-based
58 Piece Orchestra in the eighties and nineties, and several stints
in recording studios.
Over the last two years he has returned to more experimental methods
of music making and sound creation, working closely once again with
Wood, exploring the sonic possibilities offered by digital sound
processing and recording equipment.
Christopher Wood is a guitarist, composer, writer, and has a
reputation as one of the UK most original and individual painters.
He has shown extensively in London and abroad where his work is held
in numerous private, commercial and public collections. A new book
about his painting, written by Lynne Green and published by the
Greendrake Press will be available in 2010.
Paralleling his career as an artist has been an ongoing exploration
of musical language and an ambition to make sound compositions,
which are the direct equivalent of his paintings. He was the
founding member of Leeds based 58 Piece Orchestra and worked under
that name for several years making many recordings and playing too
many gigs!. His ambient electronic pieces are inspired by composers
like Messiaen, and Takamitsu, guitarists John Abbercrombie and Bill
Frisell and bands like Locsil and The Stars of the Lid. Woods
compositions combine an imaginative, lyrical and poetic musical
sensitivity with a painter’s love of abstraction, gesture and
ambiguity.
