Reverbaphon
"The Medium Thru Which Sound Travels is No Longer Present"
2003, Benbecula Records
(ben020, ben020cd)
"Reverbaphon originally from Dundee, now living in Glasgow, Scotland, this is
his first proper release, previous compilation releases include : (“radthai”
on “trade & distribution almanac volume 1” (adaadat) and “weepholograph” on
“one giant bleep for mankind” (law and auder). The name a reverbaphone is a
homemade instrument comprising of a reed mouthpiece connected to a long
cardboard tube with a spring tensioned along the length, this is then
recorded to a variablespeed tape recorder, the pitch can be altered during
recording.
"Probably the best method statement for the benbecula label so far,
reverbaphon’s freestyle and uninhibited take on electronica, merged with
conventional instrumentation, is a refreshing diversion from the preset
laptop sounds of today’s homogenous electronic releases"
ok, lets take a listen and see whats goin on....
"Only song" opens with a casual zingy rhythm very mellow, with the vocals
"Imagine a world where this was the only song, and against your will, you
had to sit, and listen to it all day long, until it made you ill", very cool
lyrics. The vocals are brought to life with the inclusion of plinky plonky
tones bouncing around, then an angry modem pushes onto the stage and
unleashes a high pitched barrage of connection noise... "CEASE MAD MODEM" I
am trying to listen. He falls silent and the music continues to a quiet
smooth ending. Very cool.
"Honky" pours into your personal space with a wily bassy tune, with some
cool sampled lyrics. A very ghostly combination of what sounds like baffled
bagpipes being dangled and swang around, whilst being kicked by a small
glitchy beat. I dont know where the sample comes from "anything your heart
desires, will come to youuuu", if anyone knows, please mail me :) "Nemmon"
begins with a jittering sitar, pausing and then restarting with a very BOC
sounding horn playing overhead. An electric heartbeat slides around every
now and again, pulsing the whole track along. Moody electric horns scream
out and slightly break up with a tiny clicky reverb, until all falls silent.
A squelchy wonderland tune plays alongside a scary high pitched recorder,
with a very shrill voice. A calm plodding rhythm and a whole heap of
goodness is "Angel".
Normally, any 'electronic music' with vocals just doesnt seem to work for
me, if the vocals are cut to crap and distorted or a robot voice it's ok. So
when I heard that Reverbaphon has vocals on some tracks I was worried, but
all worries dissapeared after listening, it's just all good. The vocals
integrate with what's happening around them. Team Tesselate have been loving
it.
Overall a very good release, and I look forward to future work from
reverbaphon."
